Run the free DOT checkUnified Carrier Registration (UCR) is a yearly registration with a fee for companies that run in interstate commerce. The UCR Plan sets the fee by bracket, and it applies to motor carriers (for-hire and private), freight forwarders, brokers and leasing companies. Not sure you need it? Use the UCR Plan's own “Do I need to register?” tool on plan.ucr.gov.
Key 2027 dates
- October 1, 2026: the 2027 registration portal opened, and 2027 fees took effect.
- Before January 1, 2027: register and pay to keep operating legally in 2027. After that date the fee is still due, and an unregistered company can face state enforcement.

The bracket is based on the number of commercial motor vehicles you own or operate. Brokers and leasing companies pay the bracket 1 fee ($55).

|---|---|
| 0–2 | $55 |
| 3–5 | $167 |
| 6–20 | $333 |
| 21–100 | $1,163 |
| 101–1,000 | $5,548 |
| 1,001 and up | $54,165 |
For comparison, the 2026 bracket 1 fee was $46. Some pages on plan.ucr.gov still show 2026 amounts, so use the 2027 table.
