Run the free DOT checkMany Hialeah owner-operators are leaving a lease to run under their own authority. Here's the order of the federal paperwork, and what to watch for.
Step 1: BOC-3 before your authority is granted
FMCSA requires a designated process agent before it grants operating authority. That's the person who can accept legal papers for your company in each state where you operate. For a motor carrier, the process agent files the BOC-3 with FMCSA for you. Only one form can be on file, and it has to cover every state you need. A post office box isn't accepted as an agent's address. Our Basic and Full setups file the BOC-3 through a partner process agent. The agent's fee is separate.
Step 2: UCR
Once you're running interstate, you register for UCR every year. The fee depends on how many commercial motor vehicles you operate. One or two trucks fall in the lowest bracket.
Step 3: Get ready for the new-entrant audit
FMCSA watches new carriers for 18 months and audits them within 12 months after operations begin. Having no drug and alcohol testing program is an automatic fail, and so is using a medically unqualified driver. That includes you, if you drive your own truck.
Florida plates and fuel tax
If your truck is over 26,000 pounds or has three or more axles and runs interstate, Florida IRP plates and an IFTA license come through FLHSMV. Our Full setup ($249) handles both account setups.
How we help, and what it costs
- New Carrier Compliance Setup (Basic), $149 one-time: UCR filing, BOC-3 through a partner process agent, MCS-150 update checklist, DQ file setup for 1 driver and a new-entrant audit prep checklist.
- New Carrier Compliance Setup (Full), $249 one-time: everything in Basic, plus IFTA and IRP account setup, D&A consortium enrollment and Clearinghouse setup, DQ files for up to 3 drivers and a mock new-entrant audit.
- Monthly Compliance Plan, $99/mo or $990/yr: deadline calendar with reminders, DQ files kept current, UCR and MCS-150 updates prepared and submitted when you authorize, and audit prep kept current.
Government and third-party fees (UCR, IRP, IFTA decals, the process agent fee) are paid by you and aren't part of our price. Full details are on the pricing page.
